Creating natural fragrances for your home is way too easy, more people should be making the switch. Getting rid of those nasty, chemical-filled Glade plugins and Febreeze “room deodorizers” can really improve air quality in your home.
These are my two very simple methods I use to give my home a lovely and unique smell that no store brand can replicate.
DIY air freshers
- Distilled water – yes you should use distilled. To make your own distilled water, boil water for 15 minutes then let it cool until room temperature.
- Vodka, rubbing alcohol, or Witch Hazel– any one of these ingredients are perfect for preserving and you only need 5tbsp or so.
Combine these base ingredients with any of these essential oils for three different and unique aromas:
Summer citrus breeze
- 5 drops wild orange essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops lime essential oil
- 5 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops geranium essential oil
- 4 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 5 drops cinnamon
- 3 drops clove
- 3 drops nutmeg
DIY stove top-potpourri
This is my 2nd favorite way to naturally fragrance. If left on the lowest heat setting on your stove, and an every now-and-then stir, it will linger for 2-3 days. The difference is you can use real fruit, herbs and real dried or fresh spices.
Ingredients: I like to use oranges, cranberries, cinnamon sticks, lemon, dried cloves, apples, vanilla, the list goes on and on! But here is a list of recipes to jump start your inspiration can also use McCormick ground dry spices instead of the WHOLE dried spices.
Add 2-3 cups of water to a small sauce pan along with your desired ingredients.
Bring water to a boil and reduce the heat to low. Do not let the water evaporate (you can add more if needed).
There’s no instructions needed! Just place the same ingredients into your slow cooker and let it sit on low all day!
It can’t get any easier to naturally fragrance your entire home.
I absolutely love throwing a combo of fresh whole cranberries, freshly sliced oranges, and a few cinnamon sticks broken in halves along with a strand of rosemary. I then add a few tablespoons of ground nutmeg and ground cloves with a splash of vanilla extract. Add 3-4 cups of water. Simmer on the lowest heat setting for as long as you desire. This is perfect to do early in the morning if you are entertaining for the holidays!
